Our government should function in a way that creates equality. The government must be willing to provide for all of its citizens, not just those with social or economic power. It is only when all people begin with equal opportunity that freedom and equality can truly exist in America. As a nation, we are far from that. It is the present nature of American society that some Americans by nature of their birth alone. They can count on reliable healthcare, parents who always provide for them, and an education that will lead them into a successful career. They can afford to fail. When we instead guarantee health care and quality education we can work to even this playing field. Everyone deserves a chance to contribute to society and the government must make these chances possible for everyone.

While I do believe that humans have the ability to be good, I know that people are quick to turn towards selfishness. A big government has the power to step in and stop selfishness. This can come through required sacrifices of income in order to contribute to the welfare of society. Everyone benefits from the government from infrastructure to first responders. It is not outrageous to ask for people to contribute to then contribute to this organization's function. I also believe that the right to a vote should be guaranteed. This way people can help control how their money in the government is being used. By making a sacrifice to help others and voting, people can use policy to create positive change through the government. The power should rest with the people and the government should exist to serve all of them. My (-7.13, -6.0) on the political compass aligns with these values.

  2. I think your points about equal opportunity are very important. That's such a necessary baseline to have in order for anything the government does that's more universal to be fair for everyone; we have to start off at the same spot in the first place. I also fully agree with the idea that asking those with more wealth to sacrifice some of it is not outrageous at all.
