Prompt #1

The 14th amendment says that all citizens of the United States have the same rights as everyone in the state in which they reside, and those rights cannot be abridged by any jurisdiction. In the movie Philadelphia, Andrew Beckett is a gay lawyer who was diagnosed with AIDs. After having much success as a lawyer at the firm he worked at and even earning a promotion for his good work, he is fired for what he believes are unjust reasons. Andrew believes that it is not his work that lead to his firing, but rather his sexual preferences and deadly disease that he carries that caused the firm to terminate him. If this is true, which the jury rules it is, then this is an infringement of the 14th amendment in that he is denied life and liberty. He is not able to continue working at his well paying job simply because he is a gay man with AIDs, and the only reason the firm gives for firing him is that a document that he swears to have left on his desk mysteriously went missing right up until the moment it was needed. Andrew tells the court how the firm set that all up as an excuse to fire him, which is also a violation his 14th amendment. The firm that fired Andrew clearly did a lot wrong and were deserving of the punishment they received.
